Facebook for Business (and shameless self-promotion)

Interested in Facebook?  Me, too... perhaps more so than others in my demographic. I'm particularly interested in the role Facebook can play in business.

Here's an article in this month's Backbone magazine about the topic.  If you have any thoughts or advice for the class, please share it here.  Can you use Facebook to get advice on your business plan idea?  To raise money?  To promote your products?

its really crazy what facebook can do for you..it will help you do specific target market, servey, and statistic..

i think they put about 0.75 cents tariff for ads each time someone see the ads..

i think it can change the way people do market research Surprised

Yes, youtube too.

Yes, I agree with Winnie. Youtube is another extremely easy and inexpensive way of advertising one's product. Since Youtube is a self-promoted video, the main focus when putting up a video is to make sure that it will attract viewers. If the video is funny or executed in a unique way, it will usually get a lot of attention. For example, one can simply act out a funny scene along with his or her advertised product. If it is done well, people will watch it. Youtube also has this unique "Views" counter, which is useful for tracking the number of viewers! One example is the PCR song, which my molecular biology professor recently showed to the class. You can't tell until the very end, but it is actually an advertisement for a Bio-RAD PCR machine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5yPkxCLads

It's not just Facebook...

Lately, I have been searching on YouTube quite a lot, and I realized that a lot of YouTube members post videos of products that they are selling. Surprisingly, they even show demonstrations of how they work and how they should be used.  Also, the video creator often provides a website at the end of the video to show where the viewer could purchase the product. By looking at this, I think YouTbue is also gaining the popularity for business promotions.

What in particular do you find interesting?

Thanks for sharing the link, Justin.  What do you find interesting about the article?  How do you feel it is relevant to the class and others in the class?

A friend and recent SFU grad with a MS in Psychology just joined CSIS (the Canadian version of M16).  His new boss made him shut down his Facebook account!  Cry

Facebook entrepreneurs

I actually have 2 or 3 friends that practically runs their business on Facebook. I don't think they actually even have a physical shop.  One of my friends sells home-made jewelry and other "girly" products on Facebook.  She takes a photo of all her products and has numerous photo albums on Facebook which acts as her product catalogue.  Another friend sent invitations to a grand opening party for his online venture through Facebook.

I actually read an article in the paper about how many new fashion designers nowadays are using Facebook to promote their clothing line since it's a free and cheap way to promote a new business. The possibilities are definitely endless.

Do they make money....

or just have lots of interest?  Perhaps you could share the URLs?  Assuming it is profitable, does this type of business meet the characteristics of the "Ideal" business on page 84 of the text?

Maybe...

I believe my friend just makes the handmade jewlery to earn extra cash. I do hear about people asking about her products and buying them but it's definitely not something "big".
This is one of the URL's to a business (based in Vancouver) on Facebook:

I would say that the business does meet many of the characteristics of the "ideal business" since there is most likely no government regulation and requires no investment.
I also found this site by Facebook which offers ways to promote your business online:
